Office of the Director of Authorised Intervention, Tuam (ODAIT)

The Office of the Director of Authorised Intervention, Tuam (ODAIT) is an independent office established under the Institutional Burials Act 2022. ODAIT’s objectives are to recover and forensically analyse, and to memorialise and bury with respect and dignity, human remains recovered from the site of the former Mother and Baby Institution in Tuam, Co. Galway.

Acknowledging the significant scientific challenges, ODAIT will, to the extent possible, identify and individualise (re-association of commingled remains into separate individuals) those human remains and establish the circumstances and cause of death. Our work is centred around key stakeholder groups who have been most impacted by the former Mother and Baby Institution in Tuam. These groups include families, survivors and the Tuam community. These groups will be informed and consulted on relevant issues as the Tuam intervention progresses. Our work will be conducted in accordance with international standards and best practice and keeping with ODAIT’s core values.
